Briitta van Staalduinen

Welcome!

I am an Assistant Professor of Politics at Oberlin College. After receiving my PhD in Government from Harvard University in March 2023, I held positions at Leiden University and the University of Konstanz. Prior to my PhD I received a MSc in Sociology from the University of Amsterdam and a BA in Political Science and Economics from the University of Wisconsin - Madison.

My research examines the ethnic, racial, and gender-based inequalities formed by the interaction of occupational change and welfare state reform as well as the consequences of these emerging inequalities for progressive politics in Europe. My work has been published in the American Political Science Review, Comparative Political Studies, and Perspectives on Politics. My dissertation, Ethnic Inequality in the Welfare State, was awarded Best Dissertation by the APSA Class & Inequality Section and Best Dissertation on a Topic of Race, Ethnicity, or Migration by the Harvard University Department of Government. You can read more about my papers and dissertation book project here.

I teach courses on the comparative politics of advanced democracies, ranging from an introduction to capitalism and democracy in the US to Europe to more focused seminars on immigration and gender politics. Alongside my reliance on and gratitude to comparative frameworks, I traverse disciplinary boundaries in both my teaching and research, incorporating and juxtaposing insights from sociology, economics, and political theory.
